A slender thread
After breaking off her engagement two years previously to Mark Vermont, a member of a family who had played a great part in providing stability and happiness to her childhood, Kate felt guilty and decided to stay away. At their insistence, Kate gathered enough courage to attend the Vermont's family gathering that Christmas, assured that Mark had moved on.
