Aftermath
Aftermath concerns two naive teenagers, aged eighteen in 1939 who are thrust into one brief sexual experience by fear of a random German bomber. Their individual embarrassment, guilt and self-disgust drives them apart, him to enlistment and eventual posting to the Far East from which he is reported as missing, believed killed, and her to train as a nurse, already fearing she is pregnant and concealing this from her parents. They are thrown unexpectedly together again in 1946, still each shamed and guilt ridden. The book explores the aftermath of their relationship, and the effect of their past on their subsequent lives.
