In March 1603, James VI of Scotland succeeded Queen Elizabeth to become James I of England. This book focuses on the central issues of James' life and reign in England, including the Union of the Crowns, the King James Bible, the Gunpowder Plot, witchcraft and tobacco, the colonizing of Virginia, and the execution of Sir Walter Raleigh, all in the light of personal letters and other contemporary documents.
